The best Valentine’s Day Wines

Eric Rabin, The Cave Operations Manager, offers some advice about buying wines for your Galentine or Valentine this year.

“With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, one might think: Which wines are great for celebrating the holiday?  Since the colors associated with Valentine’s Day are red and pink, I think choosing wines representative of these colors is a perfect path to follow.

“If you’re a sweet wine drinker, my suggestion is a red wine, called Brigante. This wine is medium purple to ruby in color and is primarily made with a Zinfandel grape.  It has beautiful fruity notes of red raspberries, cherries, and ripe blackberries. Slight cedar notes are apparent as well. Desserts are a perfect pairing with this wine.

He added that Gervasi carries two different rosés, one is lightly sweet and the other has a medium sweetness level. Romanza, a rosé that translates to “Romance”, is off-dry/semi-sweet. It has beautiful aromas of strawberries, raspberries, cherries, and a slight scent of rose. This wine pairs well with most foods from salads to appetizers to a hearty steak or pasta.

The second rosé is called Lascito, which translates to “Legacy” in English. The grape used to craft this wine is a Frontenac Gris, which is grown at Gervasi Vineyard. This wine has a medium-sweetness level and wonderful aromas of strawberries, bananas, and guava, with full mouthfeel. This wine just won Best of Class in the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition in the Rosé wine with over 1% residual sugar category. What an honor for Gervasi Vineyard!

Eric said, “If your sweetheart enjoys dry reds, I have two suggestions: Unita and Zin Zin. Unita is crafted from a Marquette grape also grown here at Gervasi Vineyard. It has a medium to deep ruby color, with notes of black cherries, truffles and cloves. The earthiness and richness of this red wine will be nicely paired with different types of red meats, and dishes that have a robust sauce or glaze.

“Think fully bodied and complex spices. The second wine, Zin Zin, is primarily made from the Zinfandel grape. Deep ruby in color, this wine is very fruit forward with aromas and flavors of black cherry, black raspberry, and blackberry. It has a jam-like aroma with black pepper, mint, and earthy notes. This would be great with robust entrees with substantial flavors that the wine can stand up to. Dark chocolate is also an amazing pairing with this complex wine.”

Eric’s bottom line when it comes to buying wines for your significant other is while it is nice and adventurous to try other wines, you should always remember to buy the wines that you and your loved one or friends like to drink.
